HoopNights is a newly formed nonprofit organization whose goal is to promote evening “pick-up” basketball throughout New Orleans. The program fills a critical void in communities. Parks that have been desolate, especially in evening hours, are utilized as the platform for the program. The residual effect is a more approachable community park, with participants coming from different parts of the city as well as within the existing community.
Recently HoopNights has won grants from Nike’s “Back your Block” competition as well as Rockefeller Philathrophy's Gulf Coast Fund for Community Renewal and Ecological Health. Winning these grants will go a long way to building our program and re-building our communities.
New Orleans has always thrived in its ability to maintain a strong sense of culture and community. As the city works to rebuild, community centers and other necessary programs have been slow to return to areas of greatest need. HoopNights aims to bridge this gap.
